According to his relatives, former Arizona state senator Russell Pearce has away at the age of 75 on January 5, 2023.
Pearce, a Republican from Mesa, apparently passed away this week after becoming ill at his Mesa home.
Pearce (born June 23, 1947) was the author of Arizona’s divisive SB 1070 immigration law, which stipulates that a police officer may only inquire about a person’s immigration status if there is a plausible suspicion that they are an illegal immigrant.
The bill was signed by the then-Gov. Jan Brewer in 2010, which prompted tens of thousands of people to march on the Capitol and some companies to boycott the state.
The requirement that immigrants carry registration papers was ultimately disallowed by the courts. It also prevented the application of a rule intended for immigrants that forbade them from obstructing traffic while they sought or offered day jobs on the streets.
