Under the direction of His Worship Edward Essel, the Bole District Magistrate Court rendered a decision in the matter of Barnard Tamayiri, a 26-year-old teacher who had fled from police custody.
After being first arrested, the defendant was charged with fleeing from police custody and then with stealing a cell phone accessory from a Tuna store.
The culprit was apprehended again at his hiding place and brought before the Bole District Magistrate Court to answer to charges about both the theft and his escape from detention, according to prosecutor ASP Wisdom Pavis during the court hearings.
After entering a guilty plea to the theft charge, he received a two-year prison sentence.
He was sentenced to two years in jail after entering a not-guilty plea to the charge of fleeing from police custody.
The court decided that Tamayiri would serve two terms concurrently, for a total of four years in prison.
The decision was made to convey a message that those who attempt to elude justice will face harsh consequences from the law and discourage others from considering doing the same.
