
Rufus McGarrigle Wainwright is an American-Canadian singer, songwriter, and composer. Loudon Wainwright III and Kate McGarrigle raised Wainwright in Rhinebeck, New York. His father is a descendant of Peter Stuyvesant, the Dutch governor of New Amsterdam in the 17th century. He came out as gay as a teenager. He studied classical music at Interlochen Arts Camp as a child.
At the age of 14, he was sexually assaulted in London’s Hyde Park by a man he met at a bar. Wainwright claims he only survived by pretending to be an epileptic and staging a seizure. He has recorded 10 studio albums and numerous tracks on compilations and film soundtracks. His 10th studio album, Unfollow the Rules, was released on July 20, 2020.
