His parents were Helen Giuliani, born Helen D’Avanzo, and Harold Angelo Giuliani, who had no other children aside from Giuliani.

His father was a plumber and a bartender who had trouble holding a job. At a point, he was convicted of felony assault and robbery and served prison time in Sing Sing.

After his release, he worked as an enforcer for his brother-in-law Leo D’Avanzo. D’Avanzo ran an organized crime-affiliated loan sharking and gambling ring at a restaurant in Brooklyn.
