Ross William Ulbricht, an American (born on March 27, 1984), is now serving a life sentence in jail for founding and running the darknet marketplace Silk Road from 2011 until his arrest in 2013.
The website promoted the sale of illicit goods and services, including drugs, while operating as a hidden service on the Tor network.
In honor of the fictitious figure from The Princess Bride, Ulbricht operated the website under the alias “Dread Pirate Roberts.”
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) detained Ulbricht in October 2013, and Silk Road was shut down as a result.
He was found guilty in 2015 of running a continuous criminal business, dealing drugs, dealing drugs over the internet, conspiring to deal drugs, conspiring to launder money, conspiring to sell fake IDs, and more.
He received a life sentence without the chance of release. Ulbricht’s appeals to the United States Supreme Court in 2018 and the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit in 2017 both failed.
