Ronald James Padavona, better known by his stage as Ronnie James Dio, was born on July 10, 1942, in the United States. He fronted and founded numerous bands over his career, including Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Dio, and Heaven & Hell.

Ronnie James “Dio” Padavona was born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, to Italian Americans Patrick and Anna Padavona of Cortland, New York.

His family moved from Cortland to Portsmouth as part of his father’s World War II military service, although they only stayed there for a short time before returning to Cortland. The singing style of American tenor Mario Lanza was modeled after Padavona, who listened to a lot of opera as a child.

He received his first formal musical training and started learning the trumpet when he was five years old. Padavona was one of the youngest students picked to play in the band at his high school, which gave performances at school dances.

Padavona formed The Vegas Kings, his first rock & roll group, while still in high school. Ronnie and the Red Caps and Ronnie and the Rumblers were later the names of the group.

At the beginning of his rock ‘n’ roll career, Padavona played the trumpet; but, as his skill set expanded, he began to play bass guitar for the bands.
