Rodrigo Chaves, an anti-establishment economist, was elected president of Costa Rica on Sunday, as voters in the Central American country rejected traditional politics amid rising social unrest and concerns over the national debt.
According to the electoral tribunal’s preliminary partial tally of the run-off ballot, Chaves, a longtime former World Bank executive, was estimated to win around 52.9 percent of the vote.
According to the results, rival contender and former Costa Rican President Jose Maria Figueres received 47.1 percent of the vote. After the results were announced, Figueres swiftly acknowledged defeat.
Many Costa Ricans stated they wanted a departure from the politicians of the past, a trend that Mr Figueres, who comes from one of the country’s most powerful political families, did not agree with.
While Mr Chaves is not new to politics (he served as economy minister in President Carlos Alvarado’s outgoing government for six months).
Aside from his political accomplishments, he is known to be a family man who has been married at least once and has children whose names have not been revealed.
