Patrick died in his sleep Sunday at his Los Angeles home, according to Jason Jenn, his carer and longtime friend and acquaintance.

Robert Patrick O’Connor was born to migrant laborers in Kilgore, Texas, and later joined the Air Force for a term that was cut short after a poem he sent to a fellow serviceman was discovered. According to Jenn, Patrick followed a handsome young man into the now-legendary Caffe Cino theatre in New York City in 1961, “and found himself in the middle of a rehearsal for a play.”

Because his parents were continually moving across the southwestern United States in search of job, he never attended a single school for an entire academic year until his senior year of high school in Roswell, New Mexico.

In his early existence, the only constants were books, films, and radio. His mother insisted on him learning to read and arranged for him to begin school a year early. Due to the continual moving, he lacked friendships and performed poorly in school. After two years, he dropped out of college.

Patrick had only seen a few school shows before falling in love with the theatre while working as a dishwasher at the Kennebunkport Playhouse in Kennebunkport, Maine.
