Former publisher and editor-in-chief of The Hollywood Reporter Robert J. Dowling passed away on Friday at his home in Santa Monica. He was 83.
After Tichi Wilkerson sold the business to BPI Communications in 1988 for a price of $26.7 million, Dowling succeeded her as the CEO of the company. While Dowling was at the helm, the publication experienced a tremendous expansion in the midst of a surge in media coverage of Hollywood. Additionally, he was instrumental in reshaping The Hollywood Reporter into a fierce competitor to the industry’s other five-day-a-week trade publication, Daily Variety.
