Robert Chazan is an American medieval historian who was born in Albany, New York, on April 25, 1936.

At Columbia University (MA, 1963), Chazan studied history and graduated with a doctorate in 1967. At the Jewish Theological Seminary in 1962, he also received rabbinic training.

Chazan spent from 1967 to 1980 as a history professor at Ohio State University in Columbus. He served as a history professor at Queens College in New York from 1981 until 1987. He joined New York University in 1987 as a Hebrew and Jewish studies professor.

In addition to researching the evolution of historiography throughout the Middle Ages, Chazan publishes on Jewish history during the Middle Ages, the interaction between Judaism and Christianity, and the history of exegesis of Jewish holy texts.
