Ricky Gervais is a British comedian best known for his work on the TV show The Office. On June 25, 1961, he was born in Reading, Berkshire, England (2001–03).
After completing his philosophy studies at the University of London, Gervais formed the little-known band Seona Dancing, which had a little hit in the Philippines in 1985 with the song “More to Lose.”
He joined a new radio station, XFM, and had a program there in 1996, when he met Stephen Merchant, who became a regular collaborator. Gervais wrote and performed humorous routines for the BBC TV shows Bruiser and Golden Years in the 1990s. He debuted as a regular on The 11 O’Clock Program then had his own talk show, Meet Ricky Gervais, for a short time in 2000.
In July 2001, BBC television aired The Office, a parody of the modern office. Gervais and Merchant’s situation comedy follows the ups and downs of the workers of Wernham Hogg, a fictional paper mill, using a pseudo-documentary technique.
