He was also interested in performance theory, 15th-century music, 20th-century classical music, nationalism in music, modernist theory, and analysis.

He is most known for his 6-volume Oxford History of Western Music, a massive overview of Western classical music.

He also published music critiques for publications on a regular basis.

Taruskin’s scholarship earned him various accolades and distinctions. He earned the American Musicological Society’s (AMS) Noah Greenberg Award in 1978, the Alfred Einstein Award in 1980, and the Royal Musical Association’s Dent Medal in 1987.

He will be missed.
