Scottish Labour politician Richard John Simpson OBE was born in Edinburgh on October 22, 1942. He served as an MSP for the Ochil constituency from 1999 to 2003 and for the Mid Scotland and Fife region from 2007 to 2016. He is a Unite member. Simpson received his education at the University of Edinburgh, Trinity College Glenalmond, and Perth Academy.  Prior to his election, Simpson worked as a general practitioner and psychiatrist. He is a fellow of both the Royal College of Psychiatrists and the Royal College of General Practitioners. Additionally, he was a former member of the faculty’s working group on prostate cancer and a former associate member of the British Association of Urological Surgeons. Denny was the chair and a founding member of the Strathcarron Hospice. He worked in the field of addiction medicine between 2003 and 2007, first in Glasgow and then as the consultant psychiatrist in charge of the West Lothian Drug Addiction Team.

Simpson was elected as the first MSP for Ochil in 1999. Simpson served on the Finance Committee (17 June 1999 – 28 November 2001), the Standards Committee (18 October 1999 – 10 November 1999), and the Health and Community Care Committee during his first term (17 June 1999 – 28 November 2001). As a Reporter for the Health and Community Care Committee, he produced three reports on the Greater Glasgow Health Board’s Stobhill Medium Secure Unit consultation process, influenza vaccination in Scotland, and organ donation. When Jack McConnell became First Minister in 2001, he appointed him as Deputy Justice Minister. Simpson, a minister, launched Scotland’s People genealogy website in 2002. He was defeated in the 2003 election.
