In 1971, he landed his breakthrough role as Shaft in the Gordon Parks-directed film. Shaft was a critical and commercial success, and it made Roundtree a household name.
Roundtree went on to star in several sequels to Shaft, as well as in a number of other films and television shows, including Earthquake, Roots, and Se7en. He also had a successful career as a voice actor, appearing in animated films and video games such as The Boondocks and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.
