The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has come under fire from a political marketing specialist and lecturer at the University of Ghana Business School for departing from the party’s basic principles under President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s direction.
The party seems to have abandoned its core principle of “Development in Freedom” during the current leadership, according to Professor Kobby Mensah. He voiced worry that the party’s basic ideals are being neglected in favor of winning elections as the party’s only current priority.
Professor Mensah emphasized that the NPP’s current actions do not align with the values that prominent figures, such as Prof. Albert Adu Boahen, espoused during their tenure.
He charged that the party was taking an “anything goes” stance in which securing electoral victories is more important than maintaining fundamental beliefs and ideals.
The political marketing specialist brought attention to the party’s apparent disregard for the importance of its basic principles, which worries party theorists.
He pointed out that since the party’s leaders seem to have abandoned the party’s basic principles recently, a large number of members could not be aware of them.
He emphasized that these ideals used to be very important to party members and influenced their actions and policy proposals.
Prof. Mensah asked why the party no longer prioritizes these key ideals and expressed shock at the seeming lack of attention on them.
He doubted that these appointees would make extraordinary contributions to addressing the party’s difficulties.
The lecturer lamented the party’s current course and expressed dissatisfaction that it departs from the historical character that the party developed during its early 1990s growth.
On Thursday, February 15, 2024, the political marketing specialist made these comments in response to the president’s reorganization of Accra-based Neat FM.
