The Chicago City Council member with the longest tenure, Ed Burke, may face his toughest reelection struggle the next year.
Burke’s opponent, who is supported by Congressman Chuy” Garcia, has the advantage heading into next year’s election.
Garcia is still considering running for mayor, but in the meanwhile, he is also endorsing candidates and entering the 14th Ward campaign, where Ed Burke may be less certain than he was four years ago.
Jeylu Guttierrez, a mother of two who works for Cook County Commissioner Alma Anaya, received Garcia’s support.
Burke has been on the council since 1969 but is currently awaiting trial on federal racketeering allegations. However, Garcia believes that voters in the 14th Ward will support his candidacy and reject Burke.
He and other elected officials looking to win the seat from Burke think there is a solid opportunity this time to elect a Latina because the 14th Ward is now predominately Hispanic.
