The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has received a severe warning from Thomas Musah, the General Secretary of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT).
If the Office does not release the salary of 404 instructors by today, Friday, February 16, 2024, he threatened to take legal action.
GNAT, NAGRAT, and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers collectively issued a 72-hour ultimatum to the OSP on February 14th, threatening legal action if the unpaid payments were not paid.
Reports claim that 1310 teachers’ salaries have not been paid by the OSP, even though 906 instructors have already received their compensation.
The delay has been attributed by the Office to an ongoing inquiry into possible ghost names on the government payroll.
In a Citi FM interview, Mr. Musah stated that the OSP is not authorized to withhold teachers’ salaries and that any additional delay would be entirely the responsibility of the OSP.
“We anticipate that the OSP will take the required action by today’s end to guarantee the release of the teachers’ pay from the banks. Mr. Musah said, “If there are any issues with specific teachers, they should speak with the director of the relevant agency directly and not get involved in the payment procedures.
He also issued a warning, saying that the OSP would be held entirely accountable for any additional measures the teaching unions took if the salaries were not paid as agreed.
“As of next week, any consequences arising from the delay in salary payments should be squarely attributed to the OSP. We will not hesitate to take action, and the OSP should be prepared to face the consequences of their inaction,” he warned.
