On October 17, 1939, Reiner Goldberg was born in Crostau, Lusatia. Goldberg made his stage debut in 1966 at the Sächsische Landesbühne in Radebeul after completing vocal studies at the Hochschule für Musik Carl Maria von Weber in Dresden.
He began giving frequent performances at Dresden’s Sächsische Staatsoper in 1973. The tenor joined the cast of the Berlin State Opera in 1981.

Beginning in the 1980s, Goldberg performed at prestigious opera houses around Europe and the world in significant tenor roles from Richard Wagner’s stage productions.
His Bayreuth Festival career got off to a dismal start. In the new Ring cycle production led by Georg Solti and produced by Peter Hall in 1983, Goldberg was hired to sing both Siegfried roles. He was replaced just before the first performances because he was unable to master the roles to Solti and Hall’s satisfaction.
