Bush attended the University of Southern California on an athletic scholarship and played for the Trojans from 2003 to 2005 under head coach Pete Carroll.

Carroll intended to use Bush as a five-pronged menace when he hired him. The rookie soon shown his ability to carry, catch, pass, and return the ball.

The first Trojan to lead the Pacific-10 Conference in kickoff returns since Anthony Davis in 1974, Bush earned a unanimous first-team Freshman All-American selection in 2003.

His 1,331 total yards set a rookie USC record. That year, the ESPN Pac-10 Newcomer of the Year rushed for 521 yards and three touchdowns on 91 attempts.

Bush and University of Utah quarterback Alex Smith were also 2004 Heisman Trophy candidates.

Bush was selected as the team’s MVP in 2004 and finished sixth in the Heisman vote. He received unanimous All-American recognition and advanced to the Walter Camp Player of the Year Award finals.

He gained 908 yards (6.3 average) on 143 rushes for six touchdowns and finished second on the team.
