The Alternative Force for Action (AFA) led by independent presidential aspirant, Dr. Sam Ankrah, has unveiled a comprehensive plan to tackle Ghana’s waste management crisis if elected into office in the upcoming general elections.
During an interview on JoyNews’ The Pulse with Elton Brobbey, Dr. Ankrah emphasized the importance of implementing a compulsory recycling policy to convert waste into valuable resources as soon as he assumes office.
“We have a special program to address waste management, and the AFA Group guarantees Ghanaians that there will be mandatory recycling of waste from day one of our tenure. We will establish robust systems and structures to effectively manage waste because waste equals money, and we must capitalize on it,” Dr. Ankrah stated.
He highlighted the economic benefits of proper waste management, outlining the various ways recycled waste can be utilized, including generating clean water, producing power, and creating building materials.
Dr. Ankrah expressed concern about the current state of waste management in Ghana, emphasizing the lack of a serious waste processing or disposal infrastructure in cities and towns, leading to overflowing waste and rubbish.
He particularly emphasized the potential health risks associated with the open gutter system, particularly during the rainy season, warning that it could trigger public health crises if not urgently addressed.
Dr. Ankrah called for a stronger linkage between health and the environment, stressing the need for a national focus on improving sanitation to prevent disease outbreaks.
As Ghana gears up for the general elections, Dr. Sam Ankrah and the AFA Group are committed to prioritizing waste management and implementing sustainable solutions to address the country’s waste crisis for the benefit of all citizens.
