George Raymond Stevenson was born on May 25, 1964, in Lisburn, Northern Ireland, as the second of three sons to Irish parents. His father was a pilot for the Royal Air Force. He moved to England with his family when he was eight years old, first to the Newcastle upon Tyne neighborhood of Lemington and then to Seaton Delaval. He graduated from the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School when he was 29 years old. Stevenson is best known for his role in the BBC/HBO series Rome as legionary Titus Pullo.
Other television credits include cameos in popular series such as Waking the Dead and Murphy’s Law, as well as lead roles in City Central and At Home with the Braithwaites. He has also appeared in several TV movies, including 1995’s Some Kind of Life and The Return of the Native. His first roles were in two Catherine Cookson films, The Dwelling Place (1994) and The Tide of Life (1995). (1996). On March 24, 2015, producers announced that Stevenson would be joining the cast of the STARZ series Black Sails as the character Edward Teach. Stevenson’s stage work includes playing Jesus Christ in the York Mystery Plays at York Minster in 2000. He played Roger in Kevin Elyot’s play Mouth to Mouth at the Albery Theatre in London in 2001, alongside Lindsay Duncan and Michael Maloney. His most well-known performance was as the Cardinal in John Webster’s The Duchess of Malfi, which he performed with Janet McTeer at the Royal National Theatre in 2003.
