Ray Scott was an environmentalist who died recently.

He died in his sleep Sunday night at his home in Alabama, according to an announcement on Bassmaster.com.

Scott was an environmentalist who pioneered catch-and-release bass fishing and collaborated with B.A.S.S. to promote clean water, capture watershed polluters, and encourage safe boating.

Presidents George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush were among his admirers, with whom he fished.

Scott sold B.A.S.S. to an investment firm in 1986, although he continued to host the Classic for several years after that

His wife, Hope Susan Scott, survives, as do his four children, Ray Wilson Scott III, Steven Leo Scott, Jennifer Eunice Epperson, and Wilson Freeman Scott.

He had ten grandkids and three great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his two brothers, Daniel and Edward Scott, as well as his first wife, Eunice Hiott Scott.
