Ray Reiland was an American Military man.

Ray was born on February 23, 1922, in Fair Acres, New Mexico, as the fifth child of Salier and Elizabeth.

His mother died of a heart attack while visiting the dentist when he was just nine months old. His bereaved father, who was left with four children to raise, carried the infant and his wife’s remains to Iowa City to be buried.

Ray was raised on Davenport Street, across from St. Wenceslaus Church, by his aunt Bertha and uncle Bohmuil Patrick.

Ray began his education at St. Mary’s of the Visitation, a private Catholic school. In June 1940, he graduated from St. Mary’s High School.

After the war broke out in the summer of 1940, he joined in the Navy on December 18, 1940.

He is known globally as a Pearl Habor survivor

Reiland died peacefully with family members present at Legacy Gardens in Iowa City, Iowa on February 13th, 2022.

Ray’s family will meet visitors from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on February 17, at Gay and Ciha Funeral and Cremation, followed by a memorial ceremony at 11 a.m., also at the funeral home.

Ray was put to rest in the English River Church of Brethren Cemetery (29252 137th Street, South English, IA) at 2 p.m. with military honors.
