Ravaged by rains: Asuofia D/A Basic School faces urgent need for support

In the Atwima Nwabiagya North District of the Ashanti Region, the Asuofia D/A Basic School is coping with the aftermath of torrential rains that tore through the area, leaving destruction in their wake.

The school, which acts as a hub for education for hundreds of kids and their teachers, is currently dealing with serious issues that are interfering with instruction and learning.

The whole block was in ruins when Asaase News went to visit the school. The furniture was left vulnerable to the rain and the intense sun because most of the classrooms had lost their roofs and the ceilings were hopelessly decaying.

Additionally, the nursery block had collapsed, putting the students in danger. The classrooms’ windows and doors were also damaged, making it a haven for mentally challenged people and stray animals.

Falisha Iddrisu, a final-year student, highlights the predicament of the students by describing how the once-vibrant classrooms are now unusable because of roof damage. She claims that because they have to share a small amount of space with their counterparts, academic activities are conducted in a crowded and difficult environment.

“This is unsettling,” Iddrisu stated to Asaase News. As you are aware, the 3A and 3C classrooms collapsed, and since I am a student in 3A, we are currently without a place to study. As you can see, the roof of the one classroom we are currently using was torn off, so academic work has been suspended whenever it rains.

“We have been affected since the rainstorm came two weeks ago, and we don’t have any classes to attend,” added another student. In hot weather, the situation becomes intolerable. We don’t have a classroom where we can take the tests, but we are writing our mock next week. We are currently using the classroom, and even the elementary students have been asked to stay at home.

A member of the unit committee named Asomana Baba-jida claims that the current situation at the school is the worst it has been in its thirty years. The urgent need for action to address the damage caused by the rains emphasizes how serious the situation is. Although the District Assembly has approved funding for renovations, he is arguing for more significant support and is pushing for the building of a new school building.

There are some extremely flimsy buildings, and we have no idea what will transpire in the next few days. We are merely lucky that the event didn’t take place during the day. Thus, we are begging the government to provide us with new structures.

Asuofia Asamang has given birth to numerous intellectuals, and as previously mentioned, the Barekese Dam forced the community to relocate. They were not given the free water and electricity that were promised, among other interventions. However, he prayed that the government would step in and allow the school to resume its full academic program.

The tale of Asuofia D/A Basic School highlights the urgent need for assistance and intervention, highlighting the significance of teamwork in reestablishing a supportive learning environment for the impacted teachers and students.
