Ramesh “Sunny” Balwani is a retired Pakistani CEO. He was the president and COO of Theranos, a privately held health technology company that made false promises about creating a breakthrough blood test procedure that takes only a little amount of sample.
Balwani, a Pakistani national, came to the United States in 1986 and studied at the University of Texas in Austin. He worked several years in the technology field after getting his undergraduate degree, co-founding the software development company CommerceBid.com.
In the early 2000s, he returned to school to get an M.B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley.
His future fiancée and companion, Elizabeth Holmes, met him there. Holmes founded Theranos in 2003, and Balwani joined the company in 2009 as COO and president. In 2015, the business was chastised for making false claims and participating in unethical practices.
In March 2018, the Securities and Exchange Commission accused Balwani of four violations of the US Securities Act. Three months later, he and Holmes were charged with fraud and conspiracy by US federal investigators.
