RAIL develops AI platform to assist domestic violence victims in Ghana

The Responsible Artificial Intelligence Lab (RAIL) has developed an innovative Artificial Intelligence (AI) application to provide better support to victims of Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) and Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in Ghana.

This AI application, once approved by relevant authorities, will offer victims a platform to express themselves confidently and access the necessary support without the need for direct human interaction.

Dr. Rita Udor, the Gender Inclusivity Officer at RAIL, highlighted the flaws in the existing ‘Boame App’ during an engagement event in Kumasi. Through collaborations with stakeholders from various sectors including the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service, NGOs, and the KNUST Counselling Centre, the project team identified ways to improve the functionality of the app with AI technology.

Dr. Udor expressed optimism that AI would significantly enhance the support services available to victims of violence in Ghana.

RAIL, hosted at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, aims to foster local talent in multidisciplinary and responsible AI research and innovation with a focus on women.

The development of this AI application by RAIL signals a promising step towards leveraging technology to address the pressing issue of gender-based violence in Ghana.
