Muhammad Rafiq Tarar was a Pakistani politician and served as a jurist who later became the ninth (9th) President of Pakistan from January 1998 until his resigned in June 2001. Prior to this, He served in office as a senator from Punjab in 1997

Rafiq Tarar was born in Mandi Bahauddin and attended the University of Punjab in 1951, where he later graduated with LLB, before beginning the practice of law as a lawyer in Lahore High Court.

After his retirement at 65, he started a political career as a legal advisor to Nawaz Sharif.

Tarar became a senator from Punjab in 1997 and the same year was nominated as presidential candidate by the Pakistani Muslim League (N), but his nomination paper was rejected by the Acting Chief Election Commissioner.

He was born on November 2, 1929.
