Cibola High School alumni Missy Martinez, aka ‘Radiant’ Martinez, has passed away. She died on February 4, 2022, at the age of 30.
Martinez was a powerful left-handed pitcher who led the Cougars to three consecutive state softball championships from 2007-09.
During her playing days at Cibola, Martinez was arguably New Mexico’s most dominant athlete in the circle.
She won 98 games in her four-year career at Cibola (2006-09), including 28 victories in 2009, and 29 — which is listed as the single-season state record on the New Mexico Activities Association website — in the 2008 season. She had 25 wins in 2007, the first of three straight seasons in which the Cougars won a Class 5A state title.
She was a second-grade teacher at McCollum Elementary School in Albuquerque, and she also was active in building a new interior design business, Haven + Honey. She also was interested in becoming a professional photographer.

Missy Martinez died from COVID-19 complications, according to her father Gary Martinez.
In a press statement, her father said: “She [Missy Martinez] was the type of person that pulled everybody together. Whether it was her family or whether it was her team, that’s just what she did. … Everyone said that she brightened up the room whenever she was there.”
“She was having the best time of her life,” Gary added.
