R. Subramaniam, a former national middle-distance runner, died at the age of 83.
The former Olympian died in Hospital Kajang on Sunday afternoon February 27, 2022.
He was sent to the hospital because he was having chest pains, but he died within an hour of being there.
Datuk A. Vaithilingam, the former secretary of the Malaysia Amateur Athletics Union (MAAU), confirmed the news.
Subramaniam, a former Director of Prisons, qualified for the Tokyo Olympics in 1964 and the Mexico Olympics in 1968.
He also competed in the Commonwealth Games in Perth, Australia in 1962 and Kingston, Jamaica the following year.
He earned seven gold and six silver medals in the Asian and SEAP Games throughout his ten-year career.
