The Queen’s birthday parade may have ended, but the first day of the Platinum Jubilee celebrations is far from over. More than 5,000 beacons will be lit across the UK, the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man, and Overseas Territories tonight.

In addition, beacons will be lit in the capital cities of Commonwealth countries. Beacon lighting is a long-standing royal tradition used to commemorate jubilees, weddings, and coronations.

Queen Elizabeth II was married to Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. As such, he was the British monarch’s consort from her coronation on 6 February 1952 until his death in 2021, making him the longest-serving consort in history.
