The daughter of Frederik IX (who died in 1972) and Queen Ingrid (who died in 2000), who was born Princess of Sweden, Anne-Marie Dagmar Ingrid, Her Majesty the Queen, was born on August 30, 1946, in Amalienborg.
The Naval Church hosted the christening of Queen Anne-Marie on October 10, 1946, and the Fredensborg Palace Chapel hosted the confirmation on March 24, 1961.
She spent the academic year of 1961 at the Chatelard School for Girls, an English boarding school in Switzerland. To improve her French, Queen Anne-Marie enrolled in a Swiss finishing school called “Le Mesnil” in 1963.
She attended there until the spring of 1964. Along with Danish, she is fluent in English, Greek, and Greek.
King Konstantin of Greece and his parents, King Paul I and Queen Frederica, visited Copenhagen in 1959 during their trip to Sweden and Norway, when young Queen Anne-Marie had her first encounter with him.
In 1961, she reconnected with him in Denmark. He had told his folks that he planned to wed her so they had a wedding in Athens on September 18, 1964.
Parents and Siblings
She was the third and final child of Danish Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Ingrid. Her mother was the lone child of the late British-born first wife of the Crown Prince of Sweden, Princess Margaret of Connaught, daughter of the Duke of Connaught; her father was the eldest son of King Christian X of Denmark and his wife, Alexandrine of Mecklenburg-Schwerin.
Anne-Marie was born with two older sisters: Princess Benedikte, who married Prince Richard of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg and resides in Germany, and Princess Margrethe, who is currently the Queen of Denmark.
Spouse and Children
The Greek Orthodox Cathedral of Athens’ Metropolis served as the venue for Anne-Marie and Constantine’s wedding on September 18, 1964, just two weeks after Anne-Marie turned 18. She was married to King Konstantin till his death.
Third cousins, Anne-Marie and her husband Constantine both had King Christian IX of Denmark as their patrilineal great-great-grandfather. Also a great-great-grandmother to both of them is Queen Victoria. Prince Philippos, Princess Theodora, Crown Prince Pavlos, Prince Nikolaos, and Princess Alexia are their five children.
