Former Minister for Power and Member of Parliament for Pru East, Dr. Kwabena Donkor, has commended the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) for fining the board members of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) GH¢5.8m.
Dr. Donkor described the decision as ‘extremely refreshing’ during an interview with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Point Blank on Eyewitness News on Citi FM.
The fine of GHS5,868,000 was imposed on the ECG board members who served from the beginning of the year until March 18, 2024, due to their breach of Regulation 39 of L.I. 2413. This regulation requires notification to consumers before any disruption in power supply.
Among those affected by the fine are Keli Gadzekpo, who resigned as Board Chair on March 26, and the current ECG Managing Director, Samuel Dubik Mahama. Dr. Donkor emphasized the importance of accountability for board members of state-owned enterprises, stating that many fail to take responsibility for the decisions made by the entities they oversee.
Overall, Dr. Kwabena Donkor views the fine imposed by the PURC as a step towards good governance within state-owned enterprises. He expressed excitement about the decision and highlighted the need for board members to be held accountable for their actions.
