Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia’s vision for leading the nation should he be elected President has elicited a range of responses, with many voicing objections over positions that deviate from those of the government he now serves in.
The vice president and nominee of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who is running for president, wants to break with the current administration in several areas.
These include doing away with the Electronic Payments Levy (E-Levy), changing National Service from being a required program to one that is voluntary, reviewing the Free Senior High School policy, doing away with the VAT on electricity, eliminating excise duties on gambling, and using digitalization to ensure tax compliance and prevent corruption.
The Vice-President is opposed by a long list of people, including the Minority Leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson; the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Communications Officer, Sammy Gyamfi; advocates for civil society and the extractive industry, Dr. Steve Manteaw;
Franklin Cudjoe, President of IMANI Africa, a policy think tank; Professor of Finance and Dean of the University of Cape Coast Business School, Prof. John Gatsi; Buabeng Asamoah, a former NPP Director of Communications; and Prof. Ransford Gyampo, a lecturer in political science.
