Dr. Elikplim Kwabla Apetorgbor, CEO of Independent Power Generators Ghana, has raised concerns about the potential negative impact of privatizing the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

According to him, privatization could jeopardize the accessibility, affordability, and stability of electricity services, which are crucial for national development.

In a statement, Dr. Apetorgbor emphasized the importance of retaining public ownership of ECG to ensure accountability, equitable access, and strategic governance control over this vital national asset. He argued that by maintaining public ownership, Ghana can uphold its commitment to serving the best interests of all citizens and safeguarding the country’s energy future.

The call for the privatization of ECG, Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo), and the Volta River Authority (VRA) was made by Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II. However, Dr. Apetorgbor cautioned against rushing into privatization, citing significant risks to equitable access, affordability, and service quality.

Instead of pursuing privatization, he recommended focusing on strengthening the governance structure of ECG and the sector as a whole, including all-inclusive representation on the board of ECG, public ownership, regulatory oversight, and community engagement for responsible consumption.

Dr. Apetorgbor highlighted the need to learn from past experiences and embrace innovative solutions to overcome the challenges of energy delivery while promoting inclusive development for all citizens. He emphasized the importance of maintaining public ownership of ECG and urged the government to prioritize sustainable solutions over hasty privatization decisions.

In conclusion, Dr. Apetorgbor’s statement serves as a reminder of the risks associated with privatization and the benefits of sustainable public ownership when it comes to ensuring reliable electricity supply and fostering national development. It is a call to action for Ghana to prioritize the long-term sustainability of its energy sector for the well-being of its citizens.
