Presidents in Ghana are super paid, they should be able to take care of their wives – Gyampo

Ghanaian Professor, Ransford Gyampo, is making headlines after stating that wives of presidents and vice presidents in Ghana should not receive salaries.

He strongly believes that the state pays the president and vice president well enough to take care of their spouses without the need for additional financial compensation.

During an appearance on TV3’s Key Points show, Prof Gyampo emphasized his viewpoint, stating, “The president is super paid well to be able to take care of his wife, we should not always be looking for avenues to dissipate the public purse.”

This comes in the wake of a ruling by the Supreme Court declaring the payment of salaries to the First and Second Ladies of Ghana unconstitutional. The decision stemmed from a lawsuit filed by the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr. Kwame Baffoe, commonly known as ‘Abronye’, seeking to reverse the approval of salaries for these positions.

The court also dismissed several reliefs sought by other individuals, including South Dayi Member of Parliament, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor. The panel of judges, led by Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, scrutinized the actions of Parliament in relation to the recommendations of the committee appointed by President Akufo-Addo to make salary and allowance recommendations for Article 71 officeholders.
