Presidential debate won’t impact elections – Professor Godfred Bokpin

Amid the ongoing controversy surrounding the presidential debate, Professor of Finance at the University of Ghana, Godfred Bokpin, has stated that a discussion is unlikely to significantly impact the upcoming general elections scheduled for December.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile, Professor Bokpin highlighted the limited time frame before the polls and expressed his belief that a debate at this stage would not alter the election outcome. However, he emphasized the importance of presidential debates in solidifying and promoting democracy in the country.

The call for a debate between the two leading presidential candidates has been escalating, with the Bawumia camp advocating for a debate between Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), and opposition candidate John Mahama.

According to reports, the Economist has suggested that Bawumia may benefit more from a debate with Mahama. The Deputy IGP appointment of a new candidate is also something that is being looked at in relation to the election 2024

On the other hand, Buem Member of Parliament, Kofi Adams, has expressed the view that Mahama does not necessarily have to engage in a debate with Bawumia. Adams argued that Bawumia’s track record of unfulfilled promises as the head of the Economic Management Team could potentially lead to embarrassment for the NPP flagbearer during a debate.

Despite the differing opinions on the matter, the decision on whether a presidential debate will take place and its potential impact on the upcoming elections remains a topic of interest and discussion among political analysts and the general public.
