Joseph Addo, the personal driver of President Nana Akufo-Addo, has emerged victorious in the La Dade-Kotopon NPP primary election with 664 votes. Addo’s closest rival, Solomon Kotey Nikoi, managed to secure 555 votes out of the total votes cast by the delegates.
A total of 1,221 delegates out of the 1,312 eligible voters participated in the primary, which took place on Saturday, April 27th. Addo, who has been President Akufo-Addo’s driver for over two decades, expressed his optimism about winning the primary and vowed to reclaim the La Dadekopon seat for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) after losing it to the NDC in the previous election.
“I was born and raised here in La, and I have spent my entire life in this constituency, so I am not a stranger here,” Addo confidently stated to reporters after submitting his nomination. He also highlighted his contributions to the youth in the area, emphasizing that he has facilitated job opportunities for them in government agencies.
The primary in La Dadekotopon became necessary following the resignation of the NPP’s parliamentary candidate, Dr. Joseph Gerald Tetteh Nyanyofio, who cited personal reasons for his decision. The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party approved the primary, granting clearance for the election to choose a new candidate for the upcoming parliamentary polls in December.
The NPP aims to regain the La Dade-Kotopon seat, which was lost to the NDC in the previous election. Addo’s victory in the primary signals a renewed sense of hope and determination within the party to secure a win in the upcoming polls. It remains to be seen how Addo’s grassroots support and intimate knowledge of the constituency will impact his campaign leading up to the general election.
