The regrettable decision by Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso to leave the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has been conveyed by President Akufo-Addo.
President Akufo-Addo, a former chair of the ECOWAS, stated that the people living in those nations would be affected by this decision.
He stated that talks are still ongoing to evaluate the effects of their departure and decide how to proceed.
“Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger’s tragic decision to exit from the ECOWAS group will have a significant detrimental impact on their communities. But ECOWAS has yet to meet.”
“It happened on Sunday, and we are waiting for a signal from the head, Nigerian President Tinubu, to indicate the time when we will have a summit to examine the implications of what has happened and the way forward for the community,” he told reporters.
Together, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger have announced that they will be leaving the ECOWAS as of right now.
The three nations voiced their displeasure, claiming that ECOWAS had strayed from its original intent and was no longer in line with their interests.
On Sunday, January 28, they publicly announced their decision to rescind their membership in the regional organization in a joint news release.
