With the deadline still a week away, Premier League teams have already surpassed their previous spending record for a summer transfer window, paying over £1.5 billion and breaking the previous mark of £1.43 billion set in 2017.
It is also more than the $1.44 billion spent throughout the entire 2017–18 season, and given that the all-time record for a Premier League season is $1.86 billion, set in the same year, it is possible that spending during the summer transfer window alone would surpass that figure.
Deloitte data indicates that gross spending in the top flight was £1.5 billion at the start of Thursday and is still expected to increase further before the deadline on next Thursday.
‘The high levels of expenditure that we’ve seen in this summer transfer window so far is a clue that the business models of Premier League teams are rebounding post-Covid,’ said Chris Wood, assistant director in Deloitte’s Sports Business Group.
Premier League clubs had spent a total of £895 million as of this time in the previous window, which had climbed by more than £200 million in the last week.
