The Ghana Police Service has taken steps to prevent an upcoming protest against ‘Dumsor’ organized by Yvonne Nelson and two others.
The organizers had planned to hold a vigil at the Revolution Square near the Jubilee House on May 25 from 8 am to midnight. However, after a meeting with the Accra Regional Police Command on May 15, they were instructed to change the location of the protest due to security concerns since the Jubilee House is a security zone.
Subsequently, the Ghana Police filed an injunction at the High Court on May 20 to prevent the protest from taking place. The court is set to rule on the Police’s request on Friday, May 24.
In response to the legal action, the conveners have announced a new date and venue for the protest. The protest will now take place on June 8, starting in front of the University of Ghana and proceeding to the Tetteh Quarshie Roundabout, where speeches will be delivered from a podium. The organizers have assured that they will minimize inconvenience to other Ghanaians by allowing the flow of traffic during the protest.
It remains to be seen how the court will rule on the Police’s injunction and how the organizers will proceed with their revised plans for the protest against ‘Dumsor’.
