An alleged mob attack on Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) employees has prompted police in the Ashanti Region to open an inquiry.
The event happened on Saturday, February 10, when Asante Akyem Central Municipality firemen from the Konongo-Odumasi Fire Station reacted to a distress call close to Stellex Pharmacy, a well-known medical facility.
The crowd was hostile toward the firefighters when they arrived at the scene, where they were already battling a strong fire near Pra Junction.
Their borrowed fire engine suffered damage as a result, and they were unable to perform their legal duties at the fire scene due to the irate crowd.
The Ghana National Fire Service’s DO3 Peter Osei Adai, a spokesman, denounced the incident and said that a formal complaint has been made to the police, demanding immediate action.
“When our troops arrived on the site, they encountered hostilities—people who had gathered in the area prevented (our soldiers) from carrying out their legal obligations.
The duty officer had to tell his crew to head back to base after they started throwing stones at them.”
The officer described the damage to the driver’s mirror and the numerous dents on the car.
