Edson Arantes do Nascimento, known simply as Pelé, was a Brazilian professional footballer who played as a forward.
Pele was regarded as one of the greatest players of all time and labeled “the greatest” by FIFA. He was among the most successful and popular sports figures of the 20th century.
Pelé was born on 23 October 1940, in Tres Coraçoes, Minas Gerais, Brazil His father was Fluminense footballer Dondinho and his mother was Celeste Arantes. He was the elder of two siblings and was named after the American inventor Thomas Edison

The legendary figure learned that his colon cancer had advanced on December 21 and was told he would be kept in the hospital in Sao Paulo called Albert Einstein Israelite Hospital, over Christmas.
He died at the hospital from multiple organ failure, a complication of colon cancer, on 29 December 2022, at the age of 82.
According to reports, Pelé had his right kidney removed in 1977, and in November 2012, he underwent a successful hip operation. Fast forward to December 2017, Pelé appeared in a wheelchair at the 2018 World Cup draw in Moscow.
A month later, he collapsed from exhaustion and was taken to hospital. In 2019, after a hospitalization because of a urinary tract infection, Pelé underwent surgery to remove kidney stones.
The memorial post on Pele’s social media highlighted the star’s international appeal, referencing an incident during the Nigerian Civil War when opposing factions agreed to a ceasefire in order to enjoy a match Pele played in the country.
Tributes poured in from around the world for the late football legend, including one from his daughter, documentary filmmaker Kely Nascimento.
She posted a photograph to her Instagram showing family members holding his hand as he rested in a hospital bed.
