Pele, the only player in history to win three World Cups, went today to the Albert Einstein hospital in Sao Paulo after a battle with cancer.

Pele rose to fame after Brazil defeated Sweden to win the 1958 World Cup when he was just 17 years old.

Pele’s official Twitter account said the following on Thursday: “King Pelé’s journey was characterized by inspiration and love, and he passed away quietly today. Love always and forever.”

With 77 goals in 92 games, Pele is one of Brazil’s all-time leading scorers. He rose to fame after Brazil won the 1958 World Cup as a 17-year-old, defeating hosts Sweden with two goals in the final.

Pele scored 1221 goals in a 21-decade period in football and per Cravegist Pele’s children; Edinho, Sandra Regina Arantes do Nascimento, and current wife Marcia Aoki survive him after his death.

Brazil’s Pele’s funeral will be held at Vila Belmiro Stadium in the state of Sao Paulo. The funeral service will also be held between Monday (January 2, 2023) and Tuesday (January 3, 2023).
