Pekka Paavola, a politician from Finland who served as minister of justice in the 1972 administration and was convicted of numerous crimes, died on March 18, 2023. He was a Tampere native.
Paavola served as Tampere’s municipal manager from 1969 to 1985. He served as the Justice Minister in Rafael Paasio’s cabinet in 1972.
In the 1980s, he was found guilty of abusing his position for personal gain and was sentenced to prison for corruption in the so-called Noppa Case. Paavola served as manager for the daily Lehtimiehet Oy and the magazine Yhtyneet Kuvalehdet, respectively.

Several reports indicated that Pekka died at Hatanpää hospital in Tampere on 18 March 2023. He died at age 89. The actual cause of his death is yet to be mentioned to the general public.
He was found guilty of aggravated tax fraud in 2002. He was given a 10-month sentence with probation.
Paavola was fired by the city council in 2002, but he was re-elected in 2004. He was chosen as the council’s chairman in December 2006 with the backing of the Conservatives, Christian Democrats, Center, and Greens. In Tampere, he still enjoys a solid reputation among many common citizens. Until 2008, he served on the Tampere city council.
Paavola received a four-month suspended sentence for lying on the witness stand on December 31, 2009, in a case involving Maija-Liisa Lahtinen.
