The supposed French swimming costume, as it was previously known, was created by cutting a one-piece in half at a time when swimsuits were becoming skimpier due to fabric shortages during WWII.
Stafford’s pieces were soon being shown in cities such as London and New York, and the designer who had previously aspired to be an architect was making a name for herself in the fashion world.
