Patricia Lee Smith was born on December 30, 1946, at Grant Hospital in Chicago to Beverly Smith, a jazz singer who subsequently worked as a waitress, and Grant Smith, a machinist at a Honeywell plant.

Patti was the eldest of the family’s four children, who also included the siblings Todd, Linda, and Kimberly. The family was partial of Irish descent.

When Smith was four years old, the family moved from Chicago to Germantown, Philadelphia, then to Pitman, New Jersey, and finally to The Woodbury Gardens area in Deptford Township, New Jersey.
