Patrick Molefe Shai was a South African actor and director who died on January 22, 2022.
He was well recognized for his parts in Soul City, Generations, Zone 14, Ashes to Ashes, and Zero Tolerance, among others. He was a founder member of the Free Film Makers of South Africa.
During a demonstration in Dobsonville against power outages, he was hit with 11 rubber bullets and taken to Tshepo Themba Hospital. He received gunshot wounds to the neck, back, leg, and arms.
Following the event, he filed a complaint against the police with the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) for the officers’ abusive behavior.
Shai was married to Mmasechaba Shai, and they had two children together.

A family of Shai spoke to Channel24 indicating,
“It is with great sadness to announce the passing of veteran actor Ntate Patrick Shai. He passed away on 22nd January 2022. The family has requested privacy and time to process the painful loss”.
The cause of death and disease of the actor was not confirmed by his family.
