Franklin made her acting debut as a hostess in a 1968 edition of At Last The 1948 Show, her first performance after graduating from RADA.

She then appeared with Joan Sims and Peter Butterworth in Uproar in the House for nine months in the West End.

Sims and Butterworth were regulars on the show, so Carry On producer Peter Rogers, who was in the audience, approached Franklin about a role in the next movie, which she accepted.
