The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has asked the committees on education, finance, culture, and tourism to study issues leading to the seeming extinction of local languages in the country and submit relevant recommendations for consideration.
This follows concerns made by Members of Parliament about the rising neglect of local languages, notably in schools across the country, and the need for urgent action to reverse this troubling trajectory.
At the next sitting of Parliament, the Speaker revealed that preparations are in motion to modernize the chamber’s technology to support the use of regional languages during legislative sessions.
“What we will do is, during the next recess, we will transform this Chamber, and we will try to put these IT systems in place and employ people to help us understand each other because we will encourage members to speak in the local languages.”
