The Defence and Interior Committee of Parliament has taken the initiative to address the ongoing controversies surrounding state lands in Cantonments, Accra.
The committee has summoned the Minister of the Interior, Mr. Henry Quartey, and the Director General of the Ghana Prisons Service to appear before them and provide clarity on the issues at hand. Of particular concern are the Ghana Prisons Service Barracks in Cantonments and the Prisons Service land in Roman Ridge, both in Accra.
This summons comes in response to planned street protests by the Coalition of La Associations and the GaDangme Coalition Against Land Injustice. These groups are protesting against what they see as unethical land seizures by political entities in the Greater Accra Region.
The focus of the demonstrations, set to begin on Tuesday, July 30, is on the Prisons Service lands in Cantonments, where private developers are aiming to redevelop the facilities. The protestors argue that this move undermines public interest and are calling for greater transparency and fairness in the handling of these lands.
During the parliamentary session, the Interior Minister and Prisons Director are expected to shed light on the current status and future plans for the disputed lands. The aim is to address the concerns raised by the Coalition and GaDangme Coalition and find a resolution to the ongoing disputes.
